You've all heard the phrase "It's not what you know, it's who you know." Okay, you do need to know some things, but building your network can lead you to many different opportunities. You can start by building your network with Aurora University Center for Student Success. Staff members are very knowledgeable in helping you stand out. They also have many connections that can lead you to a job or internship.

The importance of networking
Networking allows you to interact with professionals in your field who can act as mentors.
These individuals can share their professional journey and pass on advice to help you be successful.
They can also share how the industry has changed over the years and what you need to do to stand out in the field.
Networking also provides valuable resources.
If you are working on a project or searching for a specific role, the people in your network can answer any questions you may have.
When you are applying for a job, you may have questions on application materials or writing samples. Someone in the field will know what an employer is looking for and can provide feedback on your work.
Along with providing feedback, members of your network are great people to collaborate with on projects. Having someone in your industry assist you will give you another perspective.
Networking expands your knowledge of industries.
There are several majors that you can do multiple things with. Networking with people in various areas of your field will give you exposure and insight to different career paths.
Who is part of your network?
Everyone you know is a part of your network. Family, friends, co-workers, classmates, and professors are all examples of people in your network. Your network is comprised of multiple levels. The individuals you know directly are a part of your immediate network. However, their connections can also be great connections for you. Each network links to another. For example, you may be looking for a graphic design internship, but your entire family is in the healthcare industry. Your aunt might have a neighbor who is lead designer for a major corporation and can pass on your contact information. Talking to people you know about your career aspirations and past experiences can open many doors and create new opportunities.
Where can you add connections?
You never know who someone may know or their journey to get to where they are today. Discussing your education, experience, interests and goals is a simple way to grow your network.
Some places you can add to your network include:
Work
School
Clubs/activities
Networking events
